What Were They Thinking? - Article
Posted on August 2nd

When it comes to turning iconic muscle cars into rock-crawlers, we tend to abide by a single rule: "Keep the wrench in your pants, Johnny." But one reader convinced us to qualify our zero-tolerance position with his 1968 Firebird ex-400, which he soft-converted into a 4x4. By soft-converted, we mean he kept the original subframe, rather than slapping the helpless body shell onto a Chevy Blazer chassis or somesuch.

Still, its off-road bonafides include a torquey International 345ci eight (out of a wheat truck, natch) mated to a Chrysler 727 automatic tranny, a Geardrive transfer case and Dana 44 axles. If pressed by the muscle-car police, he says he can convert the whole thing back to street level in two days. [Thanks, Brian] Click through for more pics
